Citizens of Powers Lake turned out in droves Wednesday night to celebrate the kick-off of their preparing to become the first community in North Dakota to be designated a ‘Cardiac Ready Community’ by the North Dakota Department of Health.
The community-led initiative engages local citizens at a grassroots level to implement all of the key elements needed to be truly prepared if someone experiences a heart-related emergency. The elements include:

- CPR training
- Calling 9-1-1 to start the emergency care system
- Having AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) available to get an effective heart rhythm started
