(MINOT, ND – The Trinity Center for Diabetes Education kicks off its ‘Keys to Diabetes Success’ education series Tuesday (Jan. 31) with a program on diabetes and kidney disease starting at 7 p.m. in the Education Center at Health Center ñ Riverside, 1900-8th Avenue SE.
Registered dietitian Michelle Fundingsland, RD, LRD, and Susan Burkhart, APRN, CNS, CDE, BC-ADM, coordinator of the Center for Diabetes Education, will present ‘Healthy Kidneys, Prevention, Nutrition and Treatment,’ a primer on maintaining kidney health as part of a diabetes management program.
‘Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney disease,’ Burkhart said. ‘Too much glucose in the blood damages the kidneys’ filters, preventing them from doing a good job filtering wastes and extra fluid from the blood. The wastes and extra fluid build up in the blood and make you sick,’ she said, adding, ‘High blood pressure is the other leading cause of kidney disease in people with diabetes.’
Four additional programs are planned in 2017, all free and open to the public:
