Gastroenterology Procedures General Instructions

Procedure for Colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy and EGD

  • Review these instructions 7 days before your scheduled procedure date.
  • If you take fiber supplements or any other medications containing iron, discontinue taking those medications 7 days before your scheduled appointment. This includes multivitamins with iron.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult, age 18 or older, to drive you home from your procedure. A responsible person is someone who can receive and understand instructions, stay with the patient, and call for assistance as instructed. You will not be able to drive yourself because of the sedation you receive during the endoscopy procedure. Your driver must come to the clinic with you and drive you home.
  • Your procedure will not be started if your driver is not here. If you come by van, taxi, bus, or walk; a family member or friend must come with you.
  • You cannot be discharged alone in a van, taxi or bus, or even be allowed to walk home without a responsible adult to accompany you. You will not be discharged unless that person is present in the unit at the time of discharge.
  • Driving a car, operating any machinery, or power tool is PROHIBITED for 24 hours after your procedure.
  • No Chewing Tobacco the day of your procedure
  • Do not apply nail polish, lotion or powder on the day of your procedure. You may apply deodorant. If you have acrylic nails, the length must be short. Remove all nail polish.
  • Check with your insurance company if you have any concerns regarding insurance coverage for this test.
  • Do not wear any jewelry or body piercings to the procedure.
  • See diabetic diet instructions.
  • See Clear Liquid diet sheet.

Pediatric Patients: Patient’s Under Age 18 Years

  • A parent or legal guardian must stay at the Gastroenterology Center the entire time that the pediatric patient is here.
  • We recommend 2 adults accompany the pediatric patient on the drive home. One adult to drive and one to care for the patient.
  • Expect your child to be sleepy and possibly emotional for the remainder of the day.
  • Do not bring other siblings with you to the patient’s appointment.
  • If two children in the family are having a procedure, two adults need to be present.

Bring photo IDs and Insurance cards for the patient with you. You will need these at the time you check in.
