Dr. Shipley is board certified in general surgery and he also performs thoracic and vascular surgery. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, he completed residencies in general, thoracic and cardiac surgery at University hospitals there. He moved to Minot in 1979. Through the years he has established a broad surgical practice, including pulmonary (lung), esophageal and pacemaker surgery as well as all types of general and laparoscopic surgery. He’s a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
General surgery, despite its name, is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal organs such as, intestines including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. They also deal with diseases involving the skin, breast, and hernias. These surgeons deal mainly in the Torso.
Thoracic surgeons treat conditions of the lungs, chest wall, and diaphragm.
In vascular Surgery diseases of arteries and veins are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction.
