Current Trinity Homes Protocols (updated 11/10/20)
Trinity Homes is coordinating closely with the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) to manage a cluster of COVID-19 cases at the long-term care facility.
Trinity Homes leadership has worked with the state’s COVID-19 Strike Team for help in assessing the outbreak and employing protocols to safeguard residents and staff. For example, residents who test positive are cared for on a designated unit with trained licensed nursing staff, a medical director, and a controlled environment. Treatment is administered immediately at the bedside and anyone needing acute care is transferred to the hospital.
Staff who test positive are quarantined and monitored for symptoms in coordination with Trinity Health’s Employee Health Office. Procedures also include contact tracing and routine mass testing of staff and residents per state regulations.
Each week, long-term care facilities in North Dakota receive a risk level map per CMS regulations. Risk levels reflect the rates of cases in the county: the more cases, the more likely the virus will make its way into a nursing home. Currently Ward County is red on the map, requiring Trinity Homes to undergo mass testing twice a week and to follow guidelines such as suspension of communal dining and group activities, maintaining residents in place with only the staff on that unit, and visitation permitted for end-of-life only.
Trinity Homes takes measures to ensure that, despite the physical distancing and isolation within their rooms for safety, residents are able to bond with their loved ones. Staff conduct daily video visits with families and residents using tablets provided by Trinity Homes. Sometimes, staff use their own smart phones to make video visits possible.
Since the start of the pandemic, Trinity Homes has followed the NDDoH’s “Recommendations to Prevent and Respond to COVID 19 in LTC, Basic Care, and Assisted Living,” which precludes positive staff members or close contacts to work in the facility until their quarantine period has ended. Appropriate Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) is provided to and worn by all staff per the NDDoH guidance.
Recent cases at Trinity Homes are examples of widespread community transmission of the virus; no single factor or common source is to blame. For many months, the nursing home had zero positive cases. But the sudden spike in COVID-19 at Trinity Homes mirrors the trend in community spread: staff live in local neighborhoods and are subject to exposure as active cases rise, despite diligent efforts to maintain a safe environment at the nursing home since March.
Given the high level of community spread, Trinity Homes and Trinity Health continue to issue urgent appeals for all community members to take strong precautions: social distance, wear a face mask, wash hands frequently, disinfect surfaces, and avoid gatherings.
