Your heart is an amazing organ. It pumps oxygen and nutrient-rich blood throughout your body to sustain life – your life. It beats 100,000 times per day, pumping five or six quarts of blood each minute, or about 2,000 gallons per day.
But what if your heart stopped or no longer worked properly?
Unfortunately, it happens, and when it does there are potentially dire circumstances for the patient, and the patient’s loved ones. Trinity Health responds to an average of twelve (12) patients suffering from cardiac arrest each month in the hospital. Trinity Health also averages ten (10) cardioversions a month throughout the hospital. A cardioversion uses a defibrillator to shock the heart. These are done both during emergent situations as well as part of planned procedures.
To properly assist people facing these situations, providers need the right equipment. Trinity Health Foundation partners with Trinity Health in creating a system of care with the most significant impact on health and wellness throughout the region we serve. One way Trinity Health Foundation assists in providing the best medical care is by raising funds to purchase medical devices. Presently, the foundation desires to obtain new Lifepak 15 units for Community Ambulance Service.
Lifepaks are necessary equipment for any unit providing critical care or performing any procedures.
They are a life saving device for anyone suffering from a heart dysrhythmia that cannot be corrected by a lesser means such as medication. These devices are used for planned cardiac procedures and emergent events such as a cardiac arrest.
If you are in an ambulance being rushed to the hospital because of a problem with your heart, you want a Lifepak 15 on board to ensure that you are receiving the best care possible. The Lifepak 15 has the capacity for invasive pressure monitoring and can also monitor carbon monoxide levels. Because it has rechargeable batteries and is portable the Lifepak 15 can easily accompany patients while being transferred from an ambulance to the Emergency Trauma Center or any other unit within the hospital.
A member of Community Ambulance Service shared a story that demonstrates how important a Lifepak 15 is to the care they can deliver:
“One of the most outstanding experiences with the Lifepak 15 happened recently. The ambulance was called to a person who had collapsed in a store and CPR had been started. When the crew arrived, they attached the Lifepak 15 monitor and found the patient in a heart rhythm that could be defibrillated. After the initial defibrillation occurred the patient regained a pulse. Unfortunately, the patient became pulseless again and had to be defibrillated another time. This second effort was successful as the patient regained a pulse, became responsive, and was able to be stabilized with medications. The patient was subsequently transported to the hospital where he did well and was able to be discharged. The Lifepak 15 made the difference – having the monitors and being able to deliver defibrillation quickly, saved this person’s life.”
This is just one example to show the critical need for this piece of equipment.
Each Lifepak 15 costs $34,000 and Trinity Health Foundation is seeking to purchase 8 of these units.
While this equipment is expensive, each life that it saves is priceless.
Please consider making a generous gift toward the purchase of Lifepaks. Whatever gift you can make toward this equipment will help, and the life you help to save may be your own, or that of a family member, friend, or loved one.
