OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Our purpose as an Occupational Therapy (OT) department is to offer services to patients that will improve and assist their abilities and to adapt to and perform daily life tasks.

More specifically our objectives are:

• To improve, develop and restore functions lost or impaired through illness, injury, or deprivation

• To improve ability to perform tasks through independent functioning when functions are lost or impaired

• To prevent through early intervention, initial or further impairment or loss of function

The Occupational Therapy Department and Trinity Health provide services to acute inpatients, outpatients, home health, and hospice with rehab potential. Contract services are provided to rehab care and a number of other health care providers in our region.

Conditions treated by OT may include but are not limited to:

• Neurological impairments
• Orthopedic impairments
• Visual impairments
• Congenital anomalies
• Musculoskeletal & Connective Tissue Diseases
• Injuries from accidents, poisoning, or violence
• Developmental delays
Hand injuries
• Diseases of the circulatory & respiratory systems
• Mental disorders

With a physician referral to OT, the therapist initiates services. This process requires identification of problems relevant to needs for OT intervention. Data collection will be completed by record review, interview, observation, and standardized and non-standardized tests. There are many interventions that may take place depending on pathological/psycho/social problems, stage of development, and individual preferences, interest and expertise.

Types of treatment may include but are not limited to:

• Prevocational activities
• ADL's
• Neuromuscular re-education
• Enhancing motor coordination
• Visual perceptual skills & cognitive perceptual skills
• Design, fabrication & application of orthotic devices
• Assistive devices and guidance in the use of adaptive equipment
• Sensory motor activities
• Graded exercises and activities
• Range of motion
• Patient and family education
• Relaxation
• Stress management
• Work simplification
• Joint protection

The goal of treatment is to assist the patient in achieving his/her maximum functional level of participation in daily life tasks.
