The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has awarded Trinity Health's cancer program three-year Accreditation with Commendation, the highest level of accreditation. Accreditation with Commendation is awarded when a cancer program complies with all standards and additionally demonstrates a high level of compliance with one or more of the six standards that comprise the full scope of cancer care. "Accreditation is important to patients because it assures them they are receiving a level of care that meets national standards," Radiation Oncology Director Kevin Collins, MD, stated. "The additional award of commendation is further evidence of the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by all members of our oncology team." Just 30 percent of cancer programs in the U.S. are accredited by the CoC, according to the commission, and only half of those earn commendation. Trinity's recognition followed an onsite evaluation, during which Trinity demonstrated a high level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the scope of the cancer care, including cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.
