Trinity Health features new Same Day Surgery area

For many years, Trinity Hospital's Same Day Surgery unit was located on the building's third floor, adjacent to the Family Birth Center.

But today, following seven months of construction and remodeling, the SDS Unit is located one floor directly above that location on the 4th floor of the hospital. And according to the SDS nurse manager, Kim Rosencrans, the new space has had very positive reviews from both patients and staff.

"We average about 22 patients per day through this unit â€" nearly all patients scheduled for surgery start out here; after their surgical procedure is performed in the hospital's Operating Room, many will return to the SDS Unit until they are discharged later in the day," explained Rosencrans.

The new unit features 16 private patient areas, an upgrade from the old location where patients would often share rooms. The SDS Unit opens at 5 a.m. and runs through 8:30pm, or until the last patient leaves for home.

This SDS Unit is one of two at Trinity Health's downtown campus â€" a second surgery center opened at Trinity Hospital - St. Josephs three years ago.

According to Randy Schwan, Vice President at Trinity Health, the benefits of expanding the SDS Unit to the 4th floor was twofold.

"We intend to expand our Family Birth Center on the 3rd floor of Trinity Hospital, and that project would impact the old SDS space," Schwan explained. "Moving SDS to 4th floor gave us the opportunity to make room for 3rd floor expansion while improving the space for our Same Day patients and our staff who care for them," he added.

Officials at Trinity Health say that, while plans are still in the works for a replacement hospital campus in the future, they are committed to making the necessary improvements and expansions to current or new facilities to better meet the needs of their patients.

Founded in 1922, Trinity Health is a nonprofit, integrated healthcare system with three hospitals, two nursing homes, a network of regional clinics and Trinity Medical Group, a network of more than 170 physicians and healthcare providers. With a staff of more than 2,700 employees, Trinity Health is the region's largest employer.
