(MINOT, ND)— Dr. Dawn Mattern already serves as team physician for Minot State University any many area high schools. She soon may be adding “ski and snowboard doctor” to her list of accomplishments.
Dr. Dawn Mattern
The board certified sports medicine specialist for Trinity Health recently returned from New Zealand, where she provided physician coverage to members of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard team.
“I was taking care of the U.S. Halfpipe Snowboard Team at its training camp in Cardrona, New Zealand,” Dr. Mattern said. “I'm in the process of becoming a physician for U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams and will have another opportunity to cover the Nordic Combined team while competing in Finland in November.”
U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association maintains a pool of physicians who volunteer their time to provide medical services to the athletes. Team physicians serve as a primary resource regarding medical issues relating to an athlete’s ability to train or compete. They also provide recommendations regarding evaluation and treatment for athletes who are injured.
The reason the team traveled such a long distance to train is that Cardrona is renowned for having a world class halfpipe facility.
