(MINOT, ND)— Trinity Health pediatricians are offering sports physicals this summer for area students and athletes.

The North Dakota High School Activities Association requires that athletes have a pre-participation physical on a yearly basis. Taking part in a fall school sport means that the examination must be completed after April 15 to be valid for the 2018-2019 school year.

Pediatrician Melissa Messerly, MD, says sports physicals provide an opportunity to assess a teen’s overall health as a preventive measure. “The best sports physical is one performed by the student’s own doctor or pediatrician,” Dr. Messerly said. “The student’s regular provider has a better chance of catching something that could be overlooked by someone who isn’t familiar with their medical history.”

Each sports physical includes a thorough physical exam, an immunization update, medication review and renewals, and completion of any sports paperwork. The office visit also provides an opportunity to discuss other concerns, such as acne, BMI, or risk factors associated with diabetes.
Appointments are available by calling 857-5413 during normal business hours. Athletes may request their own pediatrician or be assigned to another doctor if they don’t already have one. SPACE index.php
