Grocery Tour Tackles Gluten-Free Shopping

(MINOT, ND)— Trinity Health’s Nutrition Services Department will offer a grocery store tour May 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. focusing on celiac disease and gluten intolerance. The tour will be held at MarketPlace Foods, 1930 South Broadway.

Registered dietitian Kayla Cole, LRD, will lead participants on an aisle-by-aisle tour of the store, providing tips on how to navigate the grocery store while shopping for a gluten-free lifestyle. “We’ll talk about safe and unsafe ingredients, label reading, foods that are naturally gluten free, gluten free alternatives and cross contamination,” Cole said.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease triggered by eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Left unmanaged it can damage the lining of the small intestine, making it difficult to absorb nutrients. While there's no cure for celiac disease, following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

Participants are instructed to meet at the east entrance of MarketPlace Foods, near the deli. Space on the tour is limited and RSVP is requested by calling Trinity’s Center for Diabetes Education at 857-5268.
