(MINOT, ND) - Interventional Cardiologist Emad M. Dodin, MD, FACC, has become the third Trinity Health provider to complete training in Venefit™ Targeted Endovenous Therapy, an advanced form of treatment for varicose veins.

Venefit is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) heat energy to ablate or vaporize varicose veins and those afflicted with a more serious condition, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

"Venefit therapy can be a welcome option for patients when conservative therapies such as compression hose fail to produce results," Dr. Dodin said. "It's performed on an outpatient basis, and patients usually resume normal activities within a few days."

The procedure involves inserting a special catheter into the diseased vein. The Venefit system provides consistent and uniform heat to contract the collagen in the vein walls, causing them to shrink and seal closed. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood re-routes itself to other healthy veins, and over time the treated vein shrinks and is absorbed by the body.

To determine whether a patient is a candidate for Venefit, the physician conducts a screening assessment, which includes verification as to whether the patient has tried compression hose for at least three months.

It's estimated more than 30 million Americans suffer from varicose veins and CVI. Symptoms include swelling, fatigue, restlessness, leg pain and skin changes.

"Varicose veins aren't just a cosmetic issue," Dr. Dodin added. "If left untreated they can develop into CVI, a progressive disorder with significant qualify-of-life impacts, including reduced mobility, skin damage and ulcer formation."

Dr. Dodin joins Interventional Cardiologist Samir Turk, MD, FACC, and Interventional Radiologist Sridhar (Jake) Naidu, DO, in offering Venefit to patients. SPACE index.php
