A catheter with a deflated balloon on its tip is inserted into a blood vessel, passed and guided to the area where the blockage has occurred in the narrowed artery segment. The balloon is then inflated and the narrowed segment widened. Then the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed. Angioplasty is performed by an interventional cardiologist working in a catheterization lab and is often followed up by a stent procedure.
