TRINiTY CANCERCARE CENTER
Leading Cutting Edge Technology Trinity CancerCare Center has two radiation oncology treatment sites providing leading edge technology, featuring Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy or IMRT. Patients benefit from IMRT due to the increased probability of cure as a result of more radiation being delivered to the tumor. With IMRT there are also reduced complications. Because IMRT is the most precise form of radiation therapy available today, it has quickly become the treatment technology of choice. Trinity CancerCare Center physicians also use Computerized Tomography Simulation and computerized 3-Dimensional therapy planning. Both of these sophisticated imaging tools not only allow them to see in greater detail the area to be treated, but also the ability to plan and precisely deliver radiation to the area. The Center features ten chemotherapy stations designed for patient comfort and convenience, each including a personal television. Breast Cancer and Digital Mammography Trinity CancerCare Center is on the leading edge of breast cancer screening featuring the most advanced digital mammography technology. To enhance breast cancer screening on a regional level, Trinity Health supports a mobile digital mammography unit. This outreach program travels thousands of miles every year to smaller communities in the region. In fact, the mammography coach offers the same high quality digital equipment available at Trinity, and results are turn around back to patients much quicker. Plus, images are stored in Trinity’s electronic record system and can be viewed by any Trinity physician. Finally, Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is an extension of the MRI service that’s been available at Trinity for the past 19 years. Breast MRI is the latest technology added to Trinity’s diagnostic arsenal in the fight against breast cancer. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer, and it’s the second leading cause of cancer in men next to lung cancer. To create another avenue for prostate cancer screenings, Trinity Health has developed a Cancer Check Clinic. According to Dr. Kevin Collins, Radiation Oncologist with Trinity’s CancerCare Center, the prostate cancer screening creates one more option for men to be checked for prostate cancer without having to leave Minot. “The main point for the Cancer Check Clinic was to increase access to men for cancer screening,” he explained. Dr. Collins also emphasized that the Cancer Check services provided at the CancerCare Center doesn’t replace a primary physician’s care but is to complement existing services. The cancer check includes a PSA, a DRE, a testicular exam and a fecal occult blood test (FOBT). The cancer check also provides opportunity for counseling for abnormal tests. Working with national cancer organizations in support of cancer trials Accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, Trinity’s CancerCare Center services are linked with one of the nation’s leading cancer research organization for the purpose of conducting clinical trial. Through Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and Cancer Trials Support Unit (CTSU), trials can be accessed locally that are available worldwide. These trials link Trinity CancerCare patients to physicians and patients in other cancer care centers such as Mayo Clinic and MD Anderson Cancer Care Center. Clinical trials assure that each patient is receiving the most advanced care possible through an exchange of treatment information. This allows patients to remain close to home and their family support system while receiving cancer care. In addition, Trinity CancerCare Center has an active and functional Tumor Registry. A Tumor Registry is a system that records all the types of cancers patients are diagnosed with along with their treatments so that data-driven, evidence-based cancer prevention and control programs can be implemented to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality. Accreditation and Cancer Specific Information Trinity’s cancer care program has joined the ranks of those awarded “Accreditation with Commendation” from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. Just one in four cancer programs in the country are accredited by the College of Surgeons. Even fewer achieve commendation, the highest level of accreditation. Accreditation with Commendation is awarded when a program complies with all standards and additionally demonstrates a high level of compliance with one or more of the six standards that comprise the full scope of cancer service. Trinity received commendations in three of the six areas: clinical trial accrual, prevention & early detection, and cancer-related quality improvements. “We are very pleased that our program has met the College’s high standards,” said Kevin Collins, MD, Chief of Medical Staff and Director of Trinity’s Radiation Oncology Program. “This additional level of approval is further evidence of the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by all members of our oncology team,” Approval by the Commission on Cancer is voluntary, based on a thorough review of a program’s services and processes. A Commission team visited Trinity’s cancer facilities last April. To maintain approval, facilities must undergo a review every three years. Dr. Collins says accreditation is important to cancer patients because it assures them they are receiving a level of cancer care that meets national standards.
